One of the most influential poets of the 20th century, Ezra Pound published his first verse collection Personae in 1909. In 1920 he joined the American expatriate literary scene in Paris. After publishing several volumes of poetry and criticism, Pound moved to Italy. During the Second World War he broadcasted Fascist propaganda from Rome. Arrested in 1945 for treason, he was deemed insane. Confined to a mental hospital in Washington, D.C., he worked on his epic, The Cantos of Ezra Pound (1970). He was released in 1958 and returned to Italy.
